What is Fear Of Pop? Coming from one of pop music's master tunesmiths--and a member of one of America's more popular bands - it's an interesting question.
Fear Of Pop is many things, beginning with the artistic perspective of singer/songwriter/pianoman Ben Folds, who wrote all the material and played all of the instruments. Don't expect to hear anything resembling our favorite Southern trio here... but don't consider it a complete departure, either. Instead, consider Fear Of Pop simply another taste of the creative juices that flow within Ben Folds. And, don't be at all surprised if he surprises you!
Fear Of Pop also features William Shatner, who is responsible for the vocal aspects of "In Love." While Ben admits a fondness for Star Trek, he notes that the real inspiration for wanting to work with the actor was Shatner's own spoken word record, The Transformed Man. "I've been a fan of that record for years," says Ben. "He's doing spoken word versions of pop songs, and I always really like his voice. He has really surprising inflections. So I wrote him a letter telling him how much I loved his stuff, and I think he was pretty surprised that I knew the record, and that some of the songs that were my favorite on that record were some of his favorite, too."
