How did you get into painting?

I grew up in Cuernavaca in Mexico, sort of the Hamptons of New York. I first started drawing, but I wasn’t good at it. When I moved to Mexico City I was amazed by murals and started doing graffiti. I pretty much have been pushing myself doing what I feel like and not really going to an art school.

How would you describe your style?

I’m influenced by architecture. I’ve always taken pictures of buildings and landscapes. I [literally] study them. Most of my influences come from my imagination based on those photos. My paintings are abstract, sort of images in movement. My colors are organic and I use solemn colors like green, blue, brown…

You have been to quite a few places in Europe. What’s the difference between the US and Europe as far as painting is concerned?

In a way Europeans are more open. They want to have their own scene. In graffiti they started out by copying what was going on in New York and they began breaking that line, making different characters, abstract stuff not even letters. In the US you have a lot of regulations with graffiti art whereas in Europe it’s the opposite. You paint it, they clean it and then you paint again! Some countries don’t even have the money to clean the trains. The graffiti scene is the only scene I feel part of.
